Archaeologists in Pakistan have discovered an unknown Mughal-era tomb in the city of Lahore, the country’s second-largest city.
The tomb, which is located in the Begum Pura neighborhood, is in a state of disrepair. However, experts believe that it could be a significant historical find.
“This is a very important discovery,” said Anjum Qureshi, director of conservation and development for the Punjab Archaeology Department. “We believe that this tomb is from the Mughal era, but we will need to conduct further research to determine exactly when it was built and who it belongs to.”
The tomb was discovered after workers began clearing debris from the site. Qureshi said that the tomb is made of brick and has a single grave inside.
“We are carefully removing the debris from the tomb and taking steps to preserve it,” Qureshi said. “Once we have completed the conservation work, we will be able to conduct further research and learn more about this important historical site.”
The discovery of the tomb has been welcomed by historians and archaeologists in Pakistan.
“This is a great find,” said Syed Faizan Naqvi, a researcher who specializes in Lahore’s history and heritage. “It is important that we preserve these historical sites so that future generations can learn about our rich past.”
Naqvi believes that the tomb could be the final resting place of a prominent Mughal figure.
“The location of the tomb suggests that it could be the tomb of a member of the Mughal royal family,” Naqvi said. “Further research will hopefully shed more light on this.”
The discovery of the tomb is a reminder of the rich history of Lahore, which was once the capital of the Mughal Empire. The city is home to a number of Mughal-era monuments, including the Shalimar Gardens, the Lahore Fort, and the Badshahi Mosque.
The Punjab Archaeology Department is currently working to conserve and restore the tomb. Once the work is completed, the tomb will be open to the public.
