Punjab Govt Officially Launches Electric Rickshaw

In a bid to curb rising air pollution, the Punjab government, in collaboration with a private firm, has rolled out a pilot project launching electric rickshaws on provincial roads.

The initiative, unveiled after a high-level meeting chaired by Transport Secretary Ahmed Javaid Qazi, marks a partnership between the Transport Department and a local company.

The electric rickshaw, rigorously tested by experts, aims to significantly reduce emissions, Qazi said.

Officials touted its impressive range, claiming it can travel up to 150 kilometers on a single charge. However, details on pricing and availability remain shrouded in mystery.

This pilot comes on the heels of a recent move by the caretaker government to amend the 1969 Motor Vehicles Rules, granting legal status to the Qingqi rickshaw and allowing its official registration as a three-wheeler.

While concerns about affordability and charging infrastructure linger, the electric rickshaw initiative represents a potential first step towards a cleaner future for Punjab’s bustling cities.

Its success, however, hinges on a transparent rollout plan, competitive pricing, and adequate charging facilities – factors the government must clarify if it hopes to truly electrify its transportation landscape.
